When downloading software from the Internet you will typically find it being offered four different ways. | Freeware | software that is available
for use for an unlimited amount of time at no cost. Sometimes services may be
restricted unless you purchase a license key or an upgraded version. | | Shareware | software that is available
for use for a limited time and sometimes services may be restricted unless you
purchase a license key or an upgraded version. | | Painware | similar to freeware;
however, the software requires the installation of sales tracking software, web
browsing toolbars or additional shareware titles. | | Payware | commercial software sold for
profit |
In all cases it is important to: - Know where you are saving the file when you download it to your computer
- Know the name of the software (or the file) that you are downloading
- Check the software for viruses before you run the program
- When running the program read all screens and look for trick questions that might imply a requirement to install additional software even if it will run without the additional software
- Lastly know what the program does and if you find that you don't need the software uninstall the program
